Borgward was a German automaker founded by Carl F. W. Borgward in 1919 in Bremen, Germany. The company produced a wide range of cars, trucks, and buses until its bankruptcy in 1961.
In the 1950s, Borgward was one of the largest car manufacturers in Germany, producing a range of models from small cars to luxury sedans. The company was also known for its innovative engineering, introducing the first two-stroke diesel engine in 1950 and producing the first car with an air suspension system in 1956.
Borgward's financial troubles began in the late 1950s, as the company was expanding rapidly and investing heavily in new technologies and production facilities. Despite efforts to restructure and cut costs, Borgward was unable to turn a profit and filed for bankruptcy in 1961.
In recent years, there have been attempts to revive the Borgward brand, with a new company launched in 2008 using the name and logo of the original manufacturer. The new Borgward company has focused on producing SUVs and electric vehicles, but has yet to gain widespread traction in the market.
